A life in Angling

From successful match angler, to Specimen angler to globe trotting big fish angler, fishing has always been a driving force in my life. Starting and establishing successful business’s like Future Angling, Image Angling and SSP Baits, I have always had a knack for knowing what an average angler demands from good tackle and bait. Being at the start of the fishing tackle revolution the only pole elastic you could buy at one stage was Future, Preston or Zim. At Future we invented, improved and innovated many products that revolutionised the pole accessory market, and have been copied today. In fact at Image we created many Iconic floats and accessories that are still in demand today. Image Cut Canes, IM1 Hooks and Bread Punch Boards are still talked about today. All my life I have fished with and against the best anglers in the world, from world champions, to record fish holders. Here in these pages I wish to share with you, and engage with you on tips, tactics and methods that can help all of our fishing.

I was very fortunate to fish for very good match teams in my earlier years, teams like Trev’s Browning, Dorking and Image. We won and competed in many nationals, winter leagues and super leagues, and always fished for each other and the team. In fact I think i have fished in over 12 different Winter League divisions in my time, winning most of them with the teams i have been with. I have also fished team events at Roundhay Park, Holme Pierrepoint and the River Thames that included the best anglers and teams in the country.

I feel very privileged to have fished with and include as my friends many top anglers. Anglers like Dave Vincent, Steve Gardner, Will Raison, Peter Vasey, Graham Dack and Derek Young are all anglers I have shared my fishing with. To be honest the list is endless, and all have shared their knowledge and helped me enormously in my match fishing career.

Team fishing started to decline at the start of the 2000’s, and I started several teams like Team Future, and Team Image. Although local success was had, and runners up in the NFA division two national, and runners up in the Winter League Final, it just wasn’t the same. Team fishing in the late 80’s and 90’s was the best by far.

Individually I lived near the River Lea, and local canals, and established myself as a competent canal angler, and decent team member. Over the years I have been lucky enough to win over 100+ open match competitions. Many of these match wins have come on the River Lea, and local canals including the Regents and Grand Union Canals. I was at the forefront of the London Canal Squatt fishing scene, along with the likes of Graham Smith, Graham Dack, Dereck Young and Peter Vasey. In fact in a Drennan Super League on the Grand Union at the Hole in the Wall stretch all five of us won our sections in top company. This set a new Super League record at the time, and we went on to win the round and the league. My favourite type of fishing is definitely pole and bloodworm, and if I choose one venue, it would definitely be the River Lea.

Now my passion is specimen fishing, and fishing for exotic species in Thailand. The buzz of drawing a specimen fish over the net cord, and out foxing a large fish is awesome. I have been very fortunate to catch carp to over 54lb, Siamese Carp to 138lb, Catfish to 200lb, Aripama to 280lb, and Freshwater Stingray to over 400lb.
